BELLEVUE, WA - Noting that "the road to Hell is paved with good
intentions, but we can't let good intentions create bad law," the
Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA) this
week is launching a nationwide campaign to defeat the McCain-Lieberman
Gun Show Bill, S.890.
Organizations crossing the political spectrum oppose this legislation,
said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. Groups ranging in philosophy from
the Physicians for Social Responsibility to the National Association
of Arms Shows are against McCain-Lieberman for various reasons, he
said.
"McCain-Lieberman has several drafting flaws that even many
anti-gun rights groups recognize," Gottlieb stated. "The
bill isn't about background checks at gun shows, it's about bait and
switch. As written, McCain-Lieberman invades the privacy rights of gun
owners and lays the groundwork for creation of a national gun
registration system. It would effectively put legitimate gun shows out
of business."
Gottlieb is kicking off the CCRKBA campaign with advertisements in The
Washington Times, National Review, The Weekly Standard, Insight
Magazine and the Washington Times National Weekly Edition. Advertising
will also appear in four of the nation's most prominent firearms
publications: Gun Week, Women & Guns, Gun News Digest and Point
Blank, Gottlieb said.
"Copies of our advertisement, which lists scores of politically
diverse groups opposed to S.890 are being mailed to every member of
Congress," Gottlieb added. "It will also be appearing on
hundreds of websites on the Internet, and we will distribute it
further through direct mail."
"We plan to match, dollar for dollar, every dollar spent by the
anti-gun group Americans for Gun Safety," Gottlieb vowed.
"It isn't often that people across the political spectrum, who
are typically at odds with one another, agree on something. It is
obvious that, for many reasons, traditional foes are now allies in
turning 'thumbs-down' on McCain-Lieberman."
With more than 650,000 members and supporters nationwide, the Citizens
Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is one of the nation's
premier gun rights organizations. As a non-profit organization, the
Citizens Committee is dedicated to preserving firearms freedoms
through active lobbying of elected officials and facilitating
grass-roots organization of gun rights activists in local communities
throughout the United States.
